THE GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM®

This movement system was developed by former dancer Juliu Horvath, and is a unique, holistic movement practice that is almost like a combination of yoga and pilates.

It consists of 2 methods:

  • GYROTONIC method - with equipment

  • GYROKINESIS method - without equipment

Using flowing, circular and spiral movements both methods develop co-ordination, balance, strength, breath control and joint mobility. You do not need to be a dancer, athlete or even an experienced mover to find enjoyment and health benefits from this system and clients say they leave feeling re-energised, taller, open and more relaxed.

Whilst this practice shares characteristics with other intelligent movement systems such as yoga, tai chi, pilates and dance, this system is totally unique and innovative.

GYROTONIC® method

At The Art of Movement we offer bespoke personal training in private or duet Gyrotonic classes. This is ideal for people who want a tailored approach, who have a specific injury or problem to address, or who want to learn more deeply than is possible in a group class.

Gyrotonic method combines the flexibility, breathing and relaxation aspects of Yoga, with the strengthening aspects of reformer Pilates. It works not only on deep core strength but also the breathing, stimulating neural pathways, de-compressing joints and increasing range of motion. The circular and spiral movements work the entire body, developing increased body awareness, co-ordination, core strength and joint mobility, without any jarring or strain. It is a unique holistic mind-body workout that works on the muscles, nervous system, the fascia, the lymphatic system and overall emotional wellbeing.

Who is it for?

Everyone can benefit, you don’t have to be an elite athlete. The Gyrotonic pulley tower adapts for height, arm length, leg length and ability, the weights provide both resistance and support to those recovering from injury, surgery, or illness and much of the equipment can also be used by those in wheelchairs.

A Gyrotonic session is bespoke training and is adapted to the specific needs of the individual, so as well as dancers and athletes it is also suitable for pre/post natal mums, the elderly, those with disabilities, those with osteoporosis, chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia.

For those who take Yoga or Pilates classes Gyrotonic method complements these perfectly, and can help you avoid injuries, improve your technique and extend your movement ability.

If you participate in sport or train in a gym, Gyrotonic method will balance your training with movements that may not be part of your training. You will gain flexibility, muscle balance, co-ordination and range of motion which will help you avoid injuries and improve your performance.

How Often?

Regular Gyrotonic practice can enhance and complement your existing yoga, pilates, sport, dance or fitness practice, or it can be your main form of exercise. For rapid progress 1 or more classes a week are ideal, but something is always better than nothing so whatever suits your lifestyle and your purse! The annual package also allows you to pay monthly and spread the cost of regular sessions while allowing for holidays.
